Central Kansas Market Vegetable Growers Workshop & Tomato Grafting Workshop

Locally grown vegetables are fresh, delicious, and can boost the local economy. The 3rd annual Central Kansas Market Vegetable Growers Workshop, sponsored by Sedgwick, Butler, Harvey, and Reno County Extension, will give beginning and experienced vegetable growers new skills to improve their production methods and marketing skills for selling their local vegetables, while meeting an increasing demand for locally grown produce. The new Friday workshop will explore tomato grafting techniques in-depth, including a hands-on tomato grafting exercise. On Saturday, featured speakers include Lance Chastain of Chautauqua Hills Blueberry Farm, Mark Jirak of Jirak Farms and Becky Walters of Walters Pumpkin Patch. The workshop will cover the basic vegetable and fruit production with a special emphasis on niche crops. Topics will include: Biopesticides, food safety, marketing, water challenges,growing herbs, tree fruit, nuts, and melons.The workshop will be held Friday, February 17, 2012 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, February 18, 2012 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in 4-H Hall at the Sedgwick County Extension Education Center at 21st and Ridge in Wichita. Cost of registration is $10 for Friday and $20 for Saturday. The registration deadline is Tuesday, February 14.

The Beta Sigma Phi chapters of Wichita are sponsoring a Valentine Charity Ball the evening of Saturday, February 18, at the Airport Hilton to benefit the Kansas Food Bank Food 4 Kids Backpack Program. The dinner, dance and silent auction will be open to the public this year. Tickets are $35.00 per person, with reservations due by Feb. 11. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with dinner served at 7:15 p.m.

Wichita: One of the largest, most comprehensive privately-owned collections of African American art in the United States is coming to the Wichita Art Museum, bringing with it a rich history, a once in a lifetime cultural experience and one couple’s inspiring story that brought this collection to life. The Harmon and Harriet Kelley Collection of African American Art, on view February 19 through May 13, 2012 features sixty-nine works on paper by influential African American artists from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. In conjunction with the exhibition, The Friends of WAM and The Kansas African American Museum will present a discussion with collectors Harmon and Harriet Kelley and artist, Samella Lewis.
