KPTS began broadcasting on its new digital transmitter Monday, February 16 at 10:00 a.m.

To begin receiving KPTS, you will need to scan for channels that your TV/Converter Box can receive.

Click here for a detailed explanation of how to perform a channel scan on your converter box or your television.

What is a DTV converter box?

A DTV converter box is an easy-to-install electronic device that hooks up to your analog television set or VCR and over-the-air antenna. The box converts the digital television signal into analog making it viewable on your analog equipment. After a simple initial setup, your viewing will continue just as before, except you’ll have three KPTS channels instead of one. Converter boxes cost between $50 and $70.

Make sure your antenna is pointed toward the source. More specifically, our transmission towers are located near Hutchinson, KS and Park City, KS.  The Hutchinson tower has the largest coverage area and the Park City tower fills in coverage for the SE quadrant of the larger coverage area to enhance indoor antenna usage for the metro area.

If you have multiple TVs in the house using the same antenna, the signal may be attenuated enough that you need an amplifier to make up for the splitter loss in your system.

Many people use indoor antennas or common outdoor antennas mounted in the attic. Antennas will not perform as well when they are mounted inside without a stronger signal presence; also the higher the better.  If you have restrictions on outdoor antennas we refer you to the FCC:

KPTS broadcasts three program services:

KPTS-HD1 is the main KPTS signal with many programs available in high definition.

KPTS-DT2 Explore offers PBS national programs scheduled several hours later than KPTS HD1.
Newshour airs at 9:00pm.
The PBS primetime schedule airs from 10:00pm to 1:00am.
The PBS Kids schedule is entirely different from the KPTS regular schedule. KPTS Explore also offers rebroadcasts of popular locally produced programs.

KPTS-DT3 Create delivers your favorite how-to shows on cooking, home repair, gardening and travel. Create features many programs that don’t appear in the regular KPTS schedule, such as Rick Steves’ Europe, Chefs of Napa Valley, Wine, Food and Friends, and P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home.

You must have a digital receiver to watch the KPTS-DT signals unless you subscribe to a cable or satellite service that carries the KPTS digital channels and converts them.  For help in finding KPTS programs on your cable or satellite provider click KPTS Channel Guide.

For more information regarding specific programs see the schedule on the right side of this page or check the TV Schedule page.

If you still have questions,  please email us or call KPTS at 316-838-3090, Monday through Friday, from 8:00am to 5:00pm.
